Ubuntu Touch
This is probably the most talked about OS amongst the four. You can expect the full developed OS by October this year and phones running this OS will be coming in 2014. Canonical is still working on its way to secure hardware deals and gathering network partners.
Strengths:
- Strong community base coming out of its desktop environment assures good development
- Can operate on both basic and high-end hardware
- A natural, gesture controlled interface
- Docking any high-end Ubuntu handset on a computer will make it an Ubuntu PC, which is a wow feature
- Open source platform
- Easy app development, plus it supports HTML5 Web apps
Weaknesses:
- We have been hearing a lot of delays in the deadlines and we’re still waiting for a developer version which is safer
- No Official hardware or network partners yet
Mozilla Firefox OS
While Ubuntu is definitely the most talked about amongst the four, Firefox OS is undoubtedly the fastest developed amongst these. The two phones running on this OS are already out! Not only is Mozilla using a good marketing strategy by bringing out low-end mobile phones which can promote the users to buy and try out the new OS, but the company already have tie-ups with one of the biggies.
Strengths:
- Biggest support gainer in terms of networks and manufacturers
- The OS based hardware already available

- Non-techies might not want to buy a low-cost smartphones based on a strange OS
- The low budget phones strategy might not work in the long run
Jolla Sailfish OS
Akin to Mozilla, Jolla is also working fast in time. It has not only demonstrated its finished Sailfish operating system, but has also released its first smartphone for pre-order which is already set to release this year. Jolla was set up by ex-Nokia employees, who left the Finnish group after MeeGo was dropped similar to Tizen.
Strengths:
- Experienced brains behind the group
- The MeeGO fan base is already waiting to embrace Sailfish
- The group is manufacturing its own handsets
- Sailfish is good in look and feel plus it is compatible with Android apps
Weaknesses:
- Unknown brand name and people will remember that ‘MeeGo’ was rejected
- Outside of the Jolla device not many takers for the Sailfish
Tizen OS
The half brother of Sailfish, Tizen OS is the same one which was once known as MeeGo. The platform also managed to get some brand names like Samsung and Intel. The Version 1.0 of the Tizen OS appeared in time last year, and the 2.0 came in Mobile World Congress in February. Reportedly, Samsung has confirmed that it is ready to launch its first Tizen phone during the third quarter of 2013.
Strengths:
- Big brand tie-ups: Samsung and Intel
- Supports HTML5 apps and can run Android apps too
Weaknesses:
- Too delayed
- No official confirmation of hardware
- Samsung is lovingly known as the Android manufacturer, Windows on Samsung failed, will Tizen survive?
